Women's Issues Committee

The DL21C Women's Issues Committee is a web-based network connecting the next generation of progressive New Yorkers who care about issues that impact women.

As the presidential election year kicks into full gear, the Womens'
Issues Committee is launching a campaign of our own. Over the next several months, we will have a series of provocative bulletins,
briefings, actions and gatherings, addressing a number of issues that impact women, and expose President Bush's policies that pertain to those issues.

Past Events:

Governor Christine Gregoire (WA), spoke about S-CHIP and other policies.

Naomi Wolf, famous feminist author and former Al Gore adviser, spoke about women and power in politics and how candidates can better tap into the female voter base.

New York City Commissioner of Transportation Iris Weinshall and Karenna Gore-Schiff talked about the struggles working women face in balancing work and family.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Fahima Gaheez Vorgetts, an Afghani refugee, spoke about the crisis facing women in Afghanistan and legislation sponsored by Congresswoman Maloney to help Afghani women.

Assemblymember Deborah Glick discussed the New York State Women's Health and Wellness Act - and the unequal health care coverage offered to men and women.

Manhattan Borough President, Ruth Messinger and Marie Wilson from the White House Project, spoke about the glass ceiling that women in politics still face today.

Women's Issues Committee

The Women’s Issues Committee of DL21C (WIC) explores issues that impact women, their families, their communities, and the world at large through a wide range of opportunities to inform and mobilize, including forums with leading community and national voices, advocacy opportunities on legislative issues, and informal discussions. In discussions of key themes, WIC raises and responds to questions – often multi-layered – about women’s lives today.
Please join us in our efforts to raise awareness of and energize debate about issues that impact us all, regardless of gender, and to encourage participation in improving and changing communities and lives.
